Mid-19th Century Hoop

Mid-19th Century Hoop

Angela – Recommended (page 260)

This is a very simple pattern, very easy to make, and gives a good shape to an 1840s-1860s gown. It is a very basic hoop, and in most cases, that’s all you really need as long as you use the right materials. I constructed this hoop of natural muslin and 14 gage steel wire (although I much prefer steel strapping). Ties in the back with baby blue satin ribbon. This pattern is 1/8 scale – the finished hoop is approximately 36″ long and 84″ in diameter at it’s base. This pattern can be easily expanded to make a wider hoop with more hoop rings if needed. And with a little flouncing at the hem, it becomes a nice petticoat hoop.
